  Butte Silver-Bow Summer Programs 2009


Summer is here!Parks and Open Space

Butte Silver-Bow Parks and Recreation maintains 11 major public parks, 15 miles of trails, and provides numerous programs for youth, seniors and outdoor enthusiasts. There are many parks that provide a range of recreation activities including picnicking, skate boarding, baseball/softball, and basketball. Wading Pool

A staffed wading pool is located at Chester Steele Park on Silver and Alabama Streets. It opens June 15th (or 22nd depending on the weather) and runs until August 21st. Hours are: 11:00am to 7:00pm daily (weather permitting). Map Icon [map] Map Icon [pic]

 

Skate Park/Manning Park

Located at McGruff/Manning Park, the Skate Park features a mini-ramp, quarter pipes, and launch ramps. It is located at Second and Shields across from the Berkeley Pit viewing stand. Open daily dusk to dawn. Map Icon [map]

 

Trails

The Butte trail system offers over 15 miles of trails that weave through the community along abandoned railroads, creeks, and historic mining areas. Trails are paved except for the Big Butte and Maud S Canyon trails. Leashed dogs are welcome on the trail system (except for Big Butte and Maud S where leashes are not required). Highland View LogoHighland View Golf Course

The municipal golf course offers a nine hole and par threes course. Junior golf lessons will begin June 17th, from 10am to 2pm. Adult lessons are by appointment only. For more information, call 494-7900. Rates and membership information can be found PDF Icon here.

 

Driving Range

The Driving Range at Copper Mountain Park is located just off Beef Trail Road. It is open from April 1st through Labor Day. Daily hours are dusk to dawn. The Cost is $3 for 50 balls and please note that the dispenser only accepts dollar bills. Map Icon [map]

 

2009 Butte Summer Tennis Program

The Butte Tennis Association Parks and Recreation offer a wide variety of programs to learn how to play tennis or brush up on your strokes. For information on any of the Summer Tennis Programs, please get in touch with Mavis Bentley: 494-5141 or 490-7826

Summer Reading ProgramsBSB Public Library's Summer Read Program

The Public Library offers a wealth of reading strategies, lessons, and activities designed to help young children learn how to read and read better. PDF IconThe Summer Read Program strives to do just this. Also, ride the city bus to the Library FREE on Tuesday and Thursday in June & July!

 

The R.O.C.K.I.E.S. Summer Enrichment Program

Structured Reading, Math, and Jumpstart programs at the R.O.C.K.I.E.S. Summer Enrichment Program are free of charge. There are also "Healthy Kids" and "Health Enrichment" programs available for your kids. Please PDF Icondownload the program brochure for more information.

 

Museums

The World Museum of Mining is one of the few museums in the world located on an actual mine yard - the Orphan Girl Mine. With fifty exhibit buildings, countless artifacts, and sixty-six primary exhibits in the mine yard, visitors can spend a couple of hours to an entire day lost in the unfolding story. The Museum is open from April 1st-October 31st, 7 days a week. It opens at 9:00am and the last ticket is sold at 4:30pm. The grounds close at 6:00pm.

The Mineral Museum is located on the Montana Tech Campus, overlooking Butte. The Museum exhibits 1,300 specimens from its extensive collection of minerals from the area.

 

YMCA Youth Programs

The Butte Family YMCA we will be having some fun events this summer! We have added new family programs and we will be focusing on youth fitness programs such as swimming and The Strong Kids Campaign. Please visit the Butte Family YMCA web site for more infomation.

 

Orphan Girl Summer Theater Camp

The 6th Annual Dennis & Phyllis Washington Summer Theatre Camp will be held July 13th to the 24th, 2009. Students will learn about many different aspects of performing including musical theatre and movement and take part in creative games and exercises designed to excite the imagination and give students an introduction to the world of theatre. The camp will culminate in a musical theatre showcase performance in the Orphan Girl Theatre on the final day. Read More »»

Summer Art Camp for Kids (ages 7-10)

Students will explore all aspects of design and composition, materials and techniques and produce artworks in drawing, painting, papermaking, bookmaking and a variety of other media. A fun educational experience.
Art

Cost $150 (some scholarships available)

The Weather Exhibition (all ages)
May 20th-August 15th
Tuesday-Fridays 10am - 5pm
Saturdays 10am-2pm
Admission: $3 adults ~ $2 students and seniors

Thursdays are group tour days with an experienced educator. To book your group tour call Jana Faught at 723-7600 or Shawn Crowe at 491-6608 Some scholarships are available. The Weather Exhibition was developed by the San Francisco Exploritorium and explores the science of Meteorology through hands-on displays including an eight foot tall tornado simulator, dust storm simulator, a turbulent orb and much more.
